Breeder Awards Program

The SAS Breeders Award Program is designed to recognize the accomplishments of our members, to promote members’ involvement in breeding fish and other aquatic organisms, to acquire and share information on breeding, and to establish diverse availability of fish to the community. In order to obtain points for a specimen, the member must bring in a minimum of 6 offspring, at least ninety days old (negotiable, depending on species) and enter them in the BAP designated area of the club auction. The member must fill in the required information on the BAP Submission Sheet - see the link below (submissions must be sent one week prior to the end of the month to be accounted for in said month). Point classification of specimen spawned (10, 15, 20, or higher) is determined according to level of difficulty for breeding and/or raising the fry/young. Points are awarded only once for each species submitted by a member (not to include bonus points).

  • Master Breeder (900 points)

Master and Grand Master Breeder awards have an additional component of Diversification. In addition to the point requirements, Master Breeder must have submitted specimens in 8 of the 11 major fish groups/families. Grand Master Breeder must submit in at least 10 of the major fish groups/families.

ARTICLES AND PRESENTATIONS:

It is important to note that there is one other way that members can earn points for their breeder awards. An additional 15 points can be earned when an article is written on a 10 or more-point fish submitted to the Program. These articles will be kept in our reference library kept by the current BAP chairman. While these guidelines don’t have to be strictly followed, an essay of approximately 250 to 400 words discussing the fish characteristics, the breeding environment, water parameters, and the growth cycle of the fry would be expected (pictures are more than welcome. In other words, what would someone need to know to breed or key points that helped you breed a particular species? In addition to an article, members can earn an additional 20 points by creating a 5–10-minute presentation. The presentation should consist of four or more slides and include at least three photographs. Please speak with the BAP chairman for more information and guidance.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO SUBMIT FISH?

Participants must be a SAS member in good standing. Specimens are to be donated to the club through the BAP designated auction (proceeds will go towards funding certificates and awards for the Breeder Awards Program). Bring 6 or more fry that are 90 days old (negotiable by species) specimens bagged and ready for the auction to our next club meeting to be placed in the designated area for BAP auction. The auction card should be labeled clearly with the scientific name and common name if known and quantity. The letters “BAP” should clearly be written on the bag. At normal club meetings and auctions, BAP bags should be placed next to the BAP sign, so that they are grouped together and available for inspection. Fish that have been sold at auction must then be entered onto the club website at least 1 week prior to the end of the month before the next meeting.

Complete all the required information. Submissions can be made by filling out this form: submission form (please send a completed submission form, three photos of the specimen, photo requirements are described in the program guidelines. Please review the guidelines before you proceed). The fish will be logged in the BAP records. The BAP committee will assign points after each meeting. A list of that month's submitted fish, their assigned points and update to the overall standings will then be recorded. In the event that the points have not appeared, points should be awarded the following month.

Please email the BAP Chairperson with any questions or issues regarding the official standings, points or awards. JohnMattiSASBAP@gmail.com

BAP PROGRAM GUIDELINES

1. Points are awarded only once for any species per member. In other words, many different members can submit the same species; however, one single member cannot submit one species more than once for points. For example, the one-time submission of guppies would be awarded 10 points. (NOTE: Exceptions will be made for certain species that have distinct varieties in Genera example: Rainbowfish - Glossolepis, Melanotaenia, Chilatherina, Rhadinocentrus. Reach out to the BAP chairman for clarifications or questions)

2. In order for your submission to be approved it is required that a minimum of three photos are submitted along with your BAP submission form; A photo of the parents that are in your possession , A photo of the specimen within 10 days of free swimming, and a photo of the specimen at the age they are ready to be submitted to the program.

3. Eggs must be spawned by fish in breeder’s own tanks; eggs may not be obtained elsewhere and then hatched. (Violations will result in disqualification from program)

4. Any fish not included in the BAP Point Qualification list will be assigned points by the BAP Committee upon request. The point value for spawning any fish can be re-evaluated at any participant’s request by the BAP Committee (If changes are approved under normal circumstances, they will be applied to the following year awards due to the fairness of others that are participating in the program that may have already received points for said species).

5. Following a successful spawning, it is the breeder’s own responsibility to see that his points have been properly recorded by following all steps required for a submission.

6. In the event of any confusion in the identification of a fish in a complex of similar fishes, reference to a published photograph must be made for each member of the complex to get credit for that species. In the event no published photograph exists, a color photograph shall be taken and filed with the BAP Data Form. In the event of a disagreement as to the identity of the fish spawned, the decision of the BAP Committee shall be final regarding the awarding of points.

7. The similarity between related species when juvenile fish are involved may require further growth beyond 90 days before verification.

8. Suggestions, Questions, and Concerns can be directed to the BAP E-Mail address: SASBAPHAP@gmail.com or the BAP Chairperson JohnMattiSASBAP@gmail.com and escalated to the SAS Board of Directors as appropriate. We want this to be the best program for all involved. Please let us know your thoughts.

9. A member may petition the BAP Committee to submit a lower number of fry when it is known that a particular species produces small broods. Example: Goodeids

10. It is recommended that one species of fish not be housed with similar species so that hybridization can be prevented. Under normal conditions fry resulting from hybridization will not be accepted in this program.
